  • Japanese School of Oncology has expanded

    22.07.2019 04:30:19

On August 5-7, the “International Baikal School of Japanese Medicine Forum” will be held in Irkutsk. It is organized by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, the Japan-Russian Medical Exchange Foundation, the Government of the Irkutsk Region, the Oncologists Association of Siberia and the Far East, the Regional Cancer Center, the Regional Clinical Hospital of the Irkutsk Regional Order of Honor, the Irkutsk Regional Clinical Consulting and Diagnostic Center, Irkutsk State Academy of Postgraduate Education, Irkutsk State Medical University.

The forum was started by Irkutsk oncologists, who have been actively cooperating with their Japanese colleagues for over a decade. The friendship between them began with the Irkutsk doctor’s trips abroad: for example, in 2005, the endoscopist of the highest qualification category (now the head of the endoscopic department) Sergei Zhuravlev had visited the Land of the Rising Sun, where he spent a month studying at the High Medical School in Niigato. And now, for a decade the walls of the Regional Cancer Center annually host a forum called the “Japanese School of Oncology”. This year the name was changed to the International Baikal School of Japanese Medicine. This rebranding is connected with the growth of the forum: now it is dedicated not only to oncology, but also to cardiology, abdominal surgery, radiology. In addition, the International Baikal School of Japanese Medicine-2019 will be held at three sites: not only at the Regional Cancer Center, but also at the Regional Clinical Hospital, as well as at the Regional Clinical Consulting and Diagnostic Center.

Doctors and scientists from the National Cancer Center (one of the best medical institutions of Japan in the field of cancer treatment and diagnosis, founded in 1962 to fight the epidemic of oncological diseases in the territory contaminated by atomic explosions and industrial emissions of the country) will come to the Irkutsk Region headed by its director Mr. Toshiro Nishida, as well as from the Tokyo-based St. Luke’s International Hospital (Regional Cancer Center official partner since last year), Nippon Medical School (Tokyo), Medical University "Nihon" (Tokyo), the Medical Research Medipolis Institute (Kagoshima city), University Hospital and Preventive Medical Center of Niigata (Niigata), Tsukuba University (Tsukuba) and the Regional Hospital in Hamamatsu. Among the guests are both new faces and long-time friends of the Regional Cancer Center, such as MD, professor, head of the hospital endoscopy department of the National Oncology Center Mr. Ichiro Oda, and MD, professor, head of the ultrasound diagnostics department of the National Cancer Center Mr. Yasunori Mizuguchi. And this representative delegation will be headed by the Chief Consul (Deputy Consul General of Japan in Khabarovsk) Mr. Toshiaki Kadokura.

During all three days of the forum, the Japanese guests will give about two dozen lectures full of topical medical information and hold a series of master classes, demonstrating the lecture material in practice. And the Irkutsk oncologists will tell how they apply the Japanese experience, observed during past conferences, in their work routine. This will be the subject of presentations by Vasily Kukarin, head of the ultrasound diagnostics department, and Sergey Zhuravlev, head of the endoscopy department.

In addition, the forum will include meetings with the participation of the director general of the Federal Research Center for Radiology, Ministry of Health of Russia, the chief non-staff oncologist of the Ministry of Health of Russia, president of the Oncologists Association of Russia, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrei Kaprin and Director of the Federal Research Center for Oncology of N.N. Blokhin”, deputy chief surgeon and endoscopist of the Ministry of Health of Russia, head of the surgical endoscopy department of the National Medical Research Center of Surgery of AV Vishnevsky, Yuri Starkov.
