Andrei Medvednikov's dissertation work is devoted to a comparative analysis of sphincter-sparing operations in rectal cancer.

“For comparison, we took two types of rectal resection: low anterior (LAR) and abdominal perineal (APR). Analyzed various options for surgical treatment and compared its immediate and long-term results, as well as the patients’ quality of life”, says Medvednikov.

This comparative analysis was based on 174 surgeries performed in the coloproctology department of the Regional Cancer Center from 1999 to 2012. Collection of the material has been carried out since 2014: after Andrei Medvednikov and his scientific advisor Alexei Shelekhov formulated the idea for dissertation. All of 2019 was dedicated to writing and preparation for its defense: during this time Medvednikov had to go to Tomsk four times, as the nearest dissertation council for oncology operates at the Tomsk National Research Medical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The very same defending was supposed to take place in the spring of 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic has intervened postponing this event for a year.

All documents on the defended dissertation have been sent to the Higher Attestation Commission under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation – this state structure must approve Andrei Medvednikov in the scientific degree of candidate of medical sciences
