The department introduces modern aspects of morphological diagnostics of tumors and tumor-like processes using high-tech methods, including immunohistochemical and molecular genetic methods.

Also pathoanatomical department identifies: the diagnosis of the tumor process, its pathomorphological stage, prognosis, differential diagnosis of tumor and non-tumor processes, the organ metastasis with an unknown primary localization, tumor sensitivity to various types of conservative treatment.

Activities:

• Morphological diagnostics of tumor, non-tumor pathological processes on biopsy and surgical materials;
• Consultative study of histological preparations;
• Immunohistochemical diagnostics (determination of receptor status in breast cancer, determination of prognostic factors in breast cancer, diagnostics of: metastases without the primary identified focus, lymphoproliferative processes, poorly differentiated tumors and soft tissue tumors;
• Morphological basis for targeted therapy prescription;
• A fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) technique using DNA probes marked with fluorochromes using a fluorescent microscope;
• With histological specimens HER2 status of patients with breast cancer is assessed using DNA in situ hybridization (ISH) methods. It makes possible to detect the presence or absence of specific DNA sequences in chromosomes, which is extremely important for the treatment of certain aggressive forms of breast and stomach cancer.

Scientific direction:

• Morphological study of metastasis pathways in pancreatic cancer;
• Research on invasive component of pancreatic cancer for resection of superior mesenteric vein in extended pancreaticoduodenectomy;
• Studying prognostic factors in breast cancer.
