  • Ultrasound department

    The ultrasound diagnostics department of SBHE RCC was organized in Irkutsk in 1993. Today, the department is equipped with modern expert class equipment from Toshiba, GE manufacturers using elastography techniques, Doppler and non-Doppler methods for measuring blood flow.

    Activities:

    • Early diagnosis of neoplasms of various localizations during examination;
    • Preoperative assessment of the cardiovascular system using Doppler echocardiography, ultrasound of the vessels of the upper and lower extremities (arteries and veins), abdominal aorta and iliac vessels, brachiocephalic vessels, intracranial arteries;
    • Preoperative and preradiation topometry (organ and lesion boundaries determinatio on the skin surface, determination of the depth from the skin surface for external gamma therapy);
    • Ultrasound monitoring of the effectiveness of ongoing chemoradiotherapy;
    • Ultrasound guided invasive technologies;
    • Ultrasound examination of the organ blood flow using power Doppler and color flow mapping; the use of highly sensitive non-Doppler methods for recording low-velocity blood flows (SMI, B-flow);
    • Contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS);
    • Sonoelastography (compression, shear wave);
    • MicroPure ultrasound method (identification of microcalcification areas);
    • Application of malignancy risk stratification of organ focal lesions according to ultrasound data, using international systems BI-RADS, TI-RADS, LI-RADS, GI-RADS.

    Ultrasound guided manipulations:

    • Intraoperative studies of the liver, pancreas, kidneys, brain;
    • Conducting electrochemical and radiofrequency ablation of liver lesions intraoperatively;
    • Ultrasound guided parasurgical treatment procedures (nephrostomy, epicystostomy, placement of intravascular catheters);
    • Diagnostic punctures of neoplasms of various localizations with morphological confirmation;
    • Aspiration (thoracocentesis/laparocentesis) / removal of free fluids from body cavities (pleural, abdominal).

    Manipulations performed:

    • Ultrasound of the abdominal cavity organs (liver, gallbladder, spleen);
    • Ultrasound of the retroperitoneal cavity organs (pancreas, kidneys, adrenal glands, retroperitoneal lymph nodes);
    • Transabdominal pelvic ultrasound (prostate gland, bladder, uterus, appendages);
    • Transvaginal ultrasound (uterus, appendages);
    • Transrectal ultrasound of the prostate (TRUS) with examination of pararectal tissue;
    • Thyroid ultrasound;
    • Breast ultrasound;
    • Ultrasound of peripheral lymph nodes, lesions, superficially located organs (salivary glands, orbit of the eye and soft tissues);
    • Hollow organ ultrasound to identify the symptoms of the affected hollow organ (abdominal esophagus, stomach, intestines);
    • Ultrasound of the pleural cavities to detect volumetric formations and the presence of hydrothorax;
    • Ultrasound of the pelvic organs (TA and TV).

    Scientific activities:

    The department is the base for training clinical residents from Irkutsk State Medical University in ultrasound diagnostics.

    • Researching the possibilities of ultrasound mammography in breast cancer staging;
    • Identifying any secondary heart damage in cancer patients.

    Our hospital has been closely cooperating with Japanese colleagues from the National Cancer Center in Tokyo (Japan) for more than 15 years. Doctors of the Irkutsk Cancer Center and Japanese doctors exchange and share their vast experience in practical medicine.

    The ultrasound department of the Regional Cancer Center expresses special gratitude to Yasunori Mizuguchi, MD, head of the ultrasound diagnostics department of the National Cancer Center in Tokyo (Japan) Yasunori Mizuguchi.
